29th April 2018 – Club Day at Rathcon Lake

By Tim Pullen on 05/05/2018

I’d like to thank everyone who came along to the Club Day at Rathcon Lake, Grangecon on Sunday 29th April.  It was a lovely day weather wise – although finding sheet ice in the car park at 9 AM was a bit of a surprise.  Considering some of the rain that we’ve had recently Sunday was almost perfect – in fact a bit too bright at times for fishing – with a breeze coming along now and then.  However  there was fishing all day right through to 7 PM and we could have fished on!  Obviously the lure of winning ‘Buggles Brexit Bung’ was a very strong incentive to some….

It was great to see new and young members fishing – Gavan Woods and his son Oliver put in several hours at the start.  Frank Reynolds came along after lunch and Sinead and Seamus managed to stop him from fishing by talking about cub scouts, camping and the local landowners for an hour or so – careful Frank, you’ll end up with a place on the Committee soon!  Sorry guys but I didn’t get any photo’s of you actually fishing though!

I have to say that sitting in the Club House mid afternoon with the sun streaming down, a hot cup of tea, piece of cake and discussing the ‘one that got away’ – life doesn’t get much better.  In my defence – I have to say that this time it really was a monster!  I think it was the same one that broke Ray Creighton’s hook later on….CIMG2845As ever Dermot Page deserves great praise for ensuring that the day was as good as it gets.  The lake is now stocked with both brownies and rainbows and both are thriving with fish to a decent size being caught.  The lake offers a large variety of different fly fishing haunts – from deep (20ft plus) to shallow, narrow to broad, side of lake and points, pathways and banks, and is actually quite difficult in places to make a good cast.  This all adds to the pleasure as it is not your typical man-made, featureless water.

CIMG2846

Joe and Pádraig Heffernen were the first into the fish with several hooked and lost before a decent sized one was landed.  They kept this up all day from all around the lake and ended up with 3 and 6 respectively -much to Joe’s annoyance (Joe says that he taught Pádraig everything he knows – clearly he is far too good a teacher!).

Now you see him, now you don’t!  Seamus Buggle gets a close up view of how the Heffernans land a fish.

CIMG2859   CIMG2858   CIMG2857

Ray Warrick took up a strategic position at the end of the point, and stayed there – CIMG2856and stayed there….CIMG2852

and stayed there…CIMG2855

Finally going into ‘stealth mode’ to catch several fish….CIMG2850He is actually there – if you look closely enough!  Well done to Ray for being the days most persistant angler…..

Now – Ray Creighton took up a spot opposite Ray W – on the basis that Ray W must have scared all the fish towards him… He does look happy doesn’t he – as he tries out his new reel….

CIMG2851

Let’s put that into perspective – literally….

CIMG2853

Oh – OK then…. take the zoom lens off…

CIMG2854Hopefully you can now see why this is such a great beauty of a lake…. plenty of local plant life generating places for bugs to live on – and fall in!

And Ray W continues to hold on to his prime spot!

CIMG2849

And finally…. get him straight back into the water to fight another day!

CIMG2861

Time for one last cup of tea, then pack away the kit and head for home…

CIMG2843

and one last picture or two as the light fades…

CIMG2846

Can I see Ray W still out there fishing?

14th April 2018 – Kilkea Castle : Beginners Fishing Session

By Tim Pullen on 15/04/2018

We had a great afternoon at Kilkea Castle Hotel and Golf Club on Saturday finding out about the lifecycle of bugs and how we can use that information to catch more fish.

Ray O’Reilly gave a very interesting talk after our lunch in the club house and then the ‘team’ took to the river.  Many thanks for coming along to Ray Creighton and his 2 nephews, Gary Reville and his 4 children, Sinead Pullen and our 2 boys plus their friend Conor, Jimmy Norton and his daughter Aoife, as well as Chris Mac Kenna, Johnny Griffen and me!  Despite a blustery wind we were all able to practice our casting using nymphs, wet flies and dry flies.

A quick thanks at this stage goes to all the people at Kilkea Castle.  Everyone was very helpful and we couldn’t have had better hosts.  Passing golfers were very sociable and several said how good it was to see people fishing.  Fran – the Club Captain – came out for a chat and we’re looking forward to working with them to keep the river in as high a standard as possible.  Facilities in the Club House, Bar and Restaurant are great and is open to all comers.  If you’re looking for a new place to go for lunch or a meal – this is it.

I have to say that this is possibly the most impressive way to start your afternoon’s fishing!

Castle Entrance

We had rigged up most of the rods before lunch but once on the river Ray showed us how to cast and fish with a selection of different flies.  The youngsters did very well to pick up the casting techniques and there weren’t too many tangles and snags.

The assembled crew!

Ray Creighton

Organised chaos?  Well – actually it all went really well!

Good Turnout

Chris took charge…..and whilst not fishing himself gave a lot of moral support.

Chris in charge

Ray was tireless as he went from person to person giving tips and help.

Ray and Cormac

Jamie Ben and Garys familyCormac catches a big one

Total concentration as we chase the fish!  Conor strikes a big one – or is he just snagged on the other bank?

Ray had explained at the start that stealth is a key skill to learn so as to not scare off the fish and that we should examine the bugs that we found on the river so that we could ‘match the hatch.

It is safe to say that the enthusiasm of the anglers soon meant that every fish withing 200 metres went into hiding!

What fish Waiting for the fish! Cormac and audience

Johnny Griffen – what a fantastic location to spend an afternoon.

Johnny Griffen

…and in full casting action!  Sooooo relaxed!

Ben – where’s the fish?  Jimmy (in the red camoflague jacket) is scouting them out….

Ben

Did you have a good time?

Good day out

More pictures to follow….

Don’t forget we’ve got a session at Rathcon Lake in Grangecon on the 29th April!

If you’d like to come along let me know as soon as possible.

NKTSAA – Fishing Show & Social Evening : 7th April 2018

By Tim Pullen on 30/03/2018

Brian Larkin is recommending this event being organised by NKTSAA in Sarsfields GAA Club in Newbridge on Saturday 7th April from 7 pm.

They’ve been running it successfully for a couple of years now and seems well worth a visit.

Sunday 25th March 2018 – Fishing Report from Joe Keena

By Tim Pullen on 26/03/2018

Joe Keena from Dublin choose the River Griese to commence his angling season. It was Joe’s first time to fish the river and following advice from a fellow angler he fished downstream from the bridge at the village of Ballitore.

Despite the bright sunshine, and relatively high water levels, Joe had a very enjoyable hour and a half during which he landed four beautifully coloured trout, best fish measuring circa 27 cm.

Joe is looking forward to his next visit, and is contemplating what the Griese may produce when conditions are more favourable.

Family Fishing Day – Saturday 1st July 2017

By Tim Pullen on 22/06/2017

Ray O’Reilly has organised a family day out on Saturday 1st July for Club members, family and friends at Laois Angling Centre (LAC), Ballaghmore – just near Borris-in-Ossory (1 hours’ drive from Narraghmore down the M7).  All are welcome and we will need experienced anglers to also come along and help those who are new to the sport (and maybe get in some fishing for themselves!).

http://www.laoisanglingcentre.ie/coarse-game-fishing/

LAC offers a variety of different types of fishing (spinning, float, fly, worm, etc.) across 4 lakes and is ideal for beginners.  LAC has given us the sole use of one of the lakes and it will be freshly stocked for us.

The Club has purchased 5 rods for ‘newbies’ to use (both fly and spinning) along with all the necessary equipment.  We’ll also have a number of members bringing along ‘spare’ rods for people to borrow and try out.

The aim is to give new members and youngsters a chance to catch a fish, get some training and try out the different types of fishing.  We’ve been assured that EVERYONE will catch a fish!

The plan is that we’d meet there around 12:30 (time for a picnic lunch?) and sort ourselves into groups so that everyone can have a chance of fishing along with some experienced ‘angling’ supervision and education.  Whilst clearly nice weather is important for a good day out – a bit of rain won’t stop the day going ahead.

Please note that the Club will subsidise 50% of the cost of fishing the lakes for the day (excluding food!)

You should bring along the following – (although I wouldn’t advise going out and buying a load of new gear just yet!)

  • If you have your own fishing gear – bring it along
    • If you already have some equipment but haven’t fished before or for a while we will help you set it up and use it.
  • Waterproof shoes/boots
    • Wellies are ideal for starting out
    • With lake fishing you shouldn’t need waders etc. but from recent experience I know that keeping your feet dry helps with your enjoyment.
  • Sunglasses
    • These don’t just reduce the glare off the water – they also protect your eyes from flying hooks, spinners etc.!
  • Some form of hat
    • Sounds silly – but this is also protection against possible injury (getting a hook out of a hat is far easier than from your head!)
  • Jacket
    • Ideally windproof and ‘snag free’ – think functional rather than attractive!
  • Layers of tee-shirts, shirts, fleeces
    • You can always remove layers if the weather is pleasant – there is nothing worse than a cold wind spoiling a great day out
  • Sunscreen, insect repellent and any medication (hayfever etc.)
    • Given the great summer we’re having – you might not actually need these very much.
  • For the children – a towel and a change of clothes
    • Whilst I am sure that everyone will be sensible around water I can guarantee that some people will get wet
  • Water to drink and food for the afternoon!
    • It may sound silly but it’s amazing just how quickly you will dehydrate when out fishing
    • Youngsters will not fish the whole afternoon without a break – expect several ‘rest periods’
    • There looks to be enough ‘non-fishing’ areas for football, frisbee etc. if youngsters (or adults!) if the fishing isn’t exciting enough!

Can you now please confirm as soon as you can that you’ll definitely be coming.

If you have any questions at all – just ask!

Club to attend the Narraghmore Heritage Day – 28th December

By Tim Pullen on 09/12/2016

The Club has been invited by the Narraghmore Development Association to have a stand at the Narraghmore Heritage Day on Wednesday 28th December.

The theme of the day is to celebrate the history of the area going back to 1916.

Split cane rod

Other local clubs and associations will also be there on the day and there will be a Vintage Tractor Run from the Post Office.

If you have any old fishing rods, reels, flys, books, photogrophs or pictures it would be great to have them there (safely) on display.

We plan to have a ‘Guess the weight of the Fish’, ‘Name that Fly’ as well as other competitions, demonstrations and games.  We’ll also be scouting for other Anglers who may have been a member previously or who might want to join the Club now.boat

If you have any great ideas for how to ‘dress’ the stand or ways to highlight what angling was like 100 years ago – please get in touch – your contribution would be really welcome.

If you want to either help out on the day or have something that you’d like to exhibit or just want to dress up in something vaguely old and fishy – come along!centre pin reel

All volunteers or supporters should contact either Seamus Buggle (0877407670) or Tim Pullen (0866044820).
