Inland Fisheries – Lampreys

Lampreys

Colm Whelan recently video’d Lampreys in the River Griese and we are now in touch with Tara Gallagher at the Inland Fisheries to ensure that this ancient species is monitored and it’s habitat maintained.

There are 3 species of Lamprey in Ireland – Brook (10-15 cms in length), River (up to 25 cm in length) and Sea Lampreys (up to 60 cms!).  Please refer to the information sheets below for more information.

Under the EU Habitat Directive they are protected Species.  Rivers that have been identified as spawning grounds can be registered as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and the River Barrow and River Nore SAC is selected for all 3 lamprey species.

  • Brook lamprey information sheet
  • Sea lamprey information sheet
  • Lamprey spawning and nest identification
  • River Barrow and River Nore SAC Site Synopsis

Please contact Tara Gallagher, Research Officer  (tara.gallagher@fisheriesireland.ie or +353 (0) 87 689 9134) should you see or have any information about Lampreys in the River Griese.
